8/3/2023 0 Comments Type 2 odontoid fracture x rayThis is most readily appreciated on the open mouth view which shows that the lateral masses of C1 no longer align with the lateral masses of C2, and that the spaces between the peg and the C1 lateral masses are widened. The ring expands and loses alignment with the adjacent occipital bone above, and C2 below. Indications This view focuses primarily on the odontoid process of C2, and is useful in visualizing odontoid and Jefferson fractures. Injury to C1(atlas) results in loss of integrity of its ring structure. The odontoid or 'peg' projection, also known as the open mouth AP projection (or radiograph ), is an AP projection of C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) with the patient's mouth open. This page describes typical appearances of some common C-spine fractures. (The axis is the 2nd highest spinal bone.) The atlas is the first bone of your neck it sits on top of the axis. Bones - Cortical outline/Vertebral body heightĬervical spine injuries often have characteristics which depend on the mechanism of injury. The unstable nature of a type II odontoid fracture can however incur not only secondary neurological injury, but more importantly a significant risk of non-union. The odontoid process, also known as the dens, is an upward projectile of bone that arises from the front part of the center of the axis vertebra.Alignment - Anterior/Posterior/Spinolaminar.Type III: A fracture occurring in the body of the axis underlying the dens. Look at all views available in a systematic manner Type II: A Fracture at the base of the dens.Clinical considerations are of particular importance when assessing appearances of C-spine X-rays.Fracture through the odontoid process of C2 (type 2) with lateral displacement of C1. Normal C-spine X-rays do not exclude significant injury Midline cervical spine tenderness two weeks post fall.
